What does it mean to earn a certificate in family business advising?
December 4 , 2006 – To the privately held business owner, it means a great deal. That is because Rich Snebold, their advisor at the Family Business Center at NexTier, is the only person in western PA to possess it.
To the Family Firm Institute (FFI), who awarded Snebold the c ertificate at its recent conference in San Francisco, it means he became one of only three people in PA to complete this two-year classroom and mentoring educational program. To the burgeoning industry of advising family and private companies in business, it is a sign of the times.
“It is impressive to see how far this discipline has grown,” said Dr. Cindy Iannarelli, who presented this year’s graduating class at FFI in San Francisco and reminded the 500-plus attendees that FFI had only 15 people at their inaugural event in Pittsburgh more than 20 years ago. Today, Boston-based FFI’s membership includes 189 certificate holders and 1,500 professionals and educators throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
Snebold and NexTier management co-founded Cranberry Township-based Family Business Center at NexTier in 2002. Snebold had spent more than 30 years as a managing partner in the financial services industry, counseling many owners of family enterprises.
“The cross-disciplinary components of a family business can be complex, and they include legal, financial, behavioral and business consulting,” said Snebold. Western PA is rich in family businesses; nationally, small businesses represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms (according to the U.S. Small Business Administration).
